All Three Temperature Displays Worked—So Why Did the Control Room See Three Different Values?

Three displays, three numbers
At FAT, the local oil-temperature indicator showed 62°C, the control cabinet showed 59°C and the supervisory screen showed 55°C. All three values were moving and all three devices appeared to be working. The supplier suggested correcting the discrepancy in software. The buyer’s engineer refused: first find the point in the signal chain where the values diverge.
Where three different numbers can come from
Temperature passes from the sensing element to the local instrument, transmitter, terminals, control cabinet and SCADA. Range configuration, wiring, calibration and point mapping at any of these steps can introduce a discrepancy. Adjusting software may hide a wiring or calibration error instead of correcting it.
The issue is not limited to display values
WTI, OTI and oil-level indicators often include alarm or control contacts that start fans, pumps or remote alarms. If contact duty and terminal numbers are not fixed in the signal list, one point can pass FAT while a different point is connected at site.
