Total kVA Looks Fine. Why Is One Phase Already in Trouble?

The total is below rating, so why worry?
A three-phase transformer is not above its total kVA rating. On paper, that feels safe. Field current readings tell a different story: one phase carries materially more current than the others, and neutral current is higher than expected.
A three-phase system is not one total number
Where many single-phase loads are distributed unevenly, phase currents can diverge. Commercial buildings, apartments, hotels, campuses, mixed-use facilities, and light industrial sites can all create this condition.
One heavily loaded phase is not ācancelledā simply because the other two phases are lighter.
Why imbalance belongs in procurement and design
- actual phase-conductor current
- neutral current
- voltage quality
- temperature rise
- protection and metering
- downstream equipment performance
Do not apply one global percentage to every project
What is acceptable depends on project standards, winding connection, neutral arrangement, load characteristics, and engineering criteria. The useful procurement action is not to memorize one percentageāit is to make the phase information visible before the transformer is ordered.
What to send for a replacement or mixed single-phase load
If the project includes many single-phase circuits, break down major loads by phase or panel when possible. For a brownfield replacement, actual A/B/C current records can be especially useful.
What TransformerGrid does
We do not assume total kVA proves the system is healthy. Where the load structure suggests imbalance, we flag phase distribution, neutral, and grounding as items for further project review and include the relevant questions in the RFQ/drawing clarification process.
Send the three phase currents
If you are replacing a three-phase distribution transformer and only know the total load, take one more look at the actual phase currents.
Send A/B/C current records, panel load schedules, the single-line diagram, or the existing transformer nameplate.
Total capacity can look fine while one phase is already carrying the problem.
Send your project data before you lock the kVA
If you are buying or replacing a transformer, send the load list, single-line diagram, equipment nameplates and the site information you already have. TransformerGrid can help organize the RFQ inputs and coordinate manufacturing-side technical information before quotation moves too far.
