The kVA Math Works. Why UPS, VFD and Rectifier Loads Still Make Us Stop

The spreadsheet looks complete

The buyer has total kW, power factor, expected kVA, and future expansion. Then the load list contains several words that change the conversation: UPS, VFD, rectifier, server power supplies, data equipment.

“How much load?” is not enough; “what kind of load?” matters too

Nonlinear loads can create harmonic current, additional losses, and extra heating. The effect depends on equipment type, harmonic spectrum, operating ratio, system configuration, and the applicable project criteria.

A single total kVA cannot fully describe a system dominated by power electronics.

Do not turn K-factor into a shortcut

A buyer sees UPS or VFD and asks, “So do we need a K-factor transformer?” The answer cannot be separated from the market, standard, actual harmonic data, winding arrangement, neutral design, and the overall system.

The more reliable path is to collect equipment data and define the actual harmonic environment before deciding what transformer features or system mitigation are justified.

Why this belongs in the RFQ

Data centers, automation plants, cold storage, pumping stations, mining, and renewable-energy auxiliary systems increasingly include power-electronic loads. If the RFQ says only “500 kVA, 400 V,” the manufacturing review may never see the characteristic that actually deserves attention.

Passing the kVA calculation is the first gate. Load character matters as much as load quantity.

Send your project data before you lock the kVA
