Same rating, different environment

Two projects both ask for 500 kVA. One is in a moderate climate. The other is hot, poorly ventilated, high-altitude, coastal, dusty, or otherwise demanding. If the procurement sheet lists only kVA and voltage, the two transformers can appear identical. They are not necessarily the same engineering problem.

Rated capacity does not live outside the environment

Temperature rise, cooling, insulation life, and available operating margin are affected by site conditions. Ambient temperature, altitude, ventilation, solar exposure, indoor/outdoor installation, pollution, and humidity may all influence selection or design confirmation.

There is no responsible universal derating factor that should be copied into every RFQ. The applicable standard and project specification control the final decision.

Why location is often under-specified

Many RFQs carefully state “500 kVA / 13.8 kV / 480Y/277 V / 60 Hz” and then describe the environment with only a country name. One country can contain coast, highlands, desert, tropical climate, cold region, and constrained indoor rooms. Country is not a site condition.

Environmental information worth putting into the RFQ

  • maximum and minimum ambient temperature
  • altitude
  • indoor or outdoor installation
  • ventilation conditions
  • coastal, corrosive, dusty, or polluted environment
  • enclosure/coating expectations
  • special seismic or project requirements where applicable

The same 500 kVA nameplate does not guarantee the same operating margin at every site.
